Under shelf lights should end where the shelf ends, not 90mm short. Fixed-interval strips force a cut back to the nearest solder pad, leaving a dark tail on a 780mm floating shelf. This one cuts at any point, so a run measures out exactly.
Supplied in 1 to 10 metre lengths, five colour temperatures: 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, 5000K and 6500K. 340 LEDs per metre drawing 9W per metre, on a 10mm wide 24V DC board rated IP20 for indoor dry positions only.
Why does free cut matter on a shelf run?
Free cut means no fixed cut interval to design around. A 342mm alcove shelf takes a 342mm length, not a 300mm one with a dead 42mm tail. Measure the shelf underside, cut, and the lit line reaches both ends with nothing wasted and no unlit gap where the shelf finishes.
Shelving rarely arrives in tidy multiples. Bookshelf bays and the tiers of an open shelving unit differ by a few millimetres, and a standard strip makes you round each one down. At 340 LEDs/m the light stays dot-free, so a freshly cut end reads the same as the rest of the run.
How do I fix the strip to a shelf underside?
Clean the shelf underside with isopropyl alcohol, then press the adhesive backing along a pencil line 15 to 20mm behind the front edge. Over 2 metres, or on any metal shelving unit, mount it inside an aluminium profile. The strip must never sit on bare metal without insulation.
- Heat: unwind the full length before powering it, never while it is coiled on the reel.
- Driver: size a constant voltage 24V driver roughly 20% above load, so a 3 metre run at 27W wants a 36W unit from our 24V driver range.
- Sight line: a shallow aluminium profile with a frosted diffuser hides the board from anyone seated below.
Which colour temperature suits display shelving?
Use 2700K or 3000K on living room shelving, books and ceramics, where warm white keeps timber and paper looking natural. Pick 4000K for a study or workshop shelf you actually read labels on. Choose 6500K cool white for garage and utility shelving, where clarity beats atmosphere.
5000K daylight sits between the two and suits a display shelf holding glassware; it also works well on open kitchen shelving. Brightness comes from a dimmable 24V driver; a colour changing run would need a controller instead.
